Helton Creek Falls: trail, height and access

Helton Creek Falls is a double waterfall a mile south of Vogel State Park, reached by one of the shortest free hikes in our waterfalls in Georgia guide. Two drops, a lower fall and a taller upper fall, sit close enough together that a single short trail with two viewing decks covers both.

Trail and access

From US-19/129 near Vogel State Park, a gravel Forest Service road runs about 2.2 miles to a small pullout parking area for Helton Creek Falls. From there it's a short 0.3-mile walk on a dirt path, no pavement or built surface, down to two wooden observation decks positioned at the lower and upper falls. There's no fee station and no permit required, just the drive in on gravel, which is rougher than the paved approaches at Anna Ruby Falls or Dukes Creek Falls nearby.

The falls

Helton Creek drops twice in close succession. Published heights vary between trail guides, which cite the lower fall around 30 to 35 feet and the upper anywhere from 50 to 75 feet, with the pair combined put at 100 to 120 feet; the Forest Service doesn't publish an official measurement. The two decks let visitors see each drop separately rather than from one distant overlook, a more intimate setup than the platform-and-railing view at bigger stops like Anna Ruby Falls. Helton Creek itself is a small stream, full and loud in March, noticeably quieter by Labor Day in a dry year.
