Looking Glass Falls: parking, access and hours

Looking Glass Falls is a 60-foot waterfall you can see without hiking a step: a paved overlook sits right off US 276 in Pisgah National Forest, a few miles north of Brevard, with a set of stairs down to the creek for a closer look. It's free and open year-round with no permit needed, which is exactly why the small parking area along the highway fills up fast. It's one of the stops in our waterfalls in North Carolina guide; for other states, start from the waterfalls near me map.

Getting there and parking

Looking Glass Falls sits on US 276 in Pisgah National Forest, a short drive north of Brevard on the route toward the Blue Ridge Parkway, with a paved pull-off and overlook right at the road (U.S. Forest Service, Looking Glass Falls Scenic Area). A stairway leads down from the overlook to the creek at the base of the falls for visitors who want a closer view than the roadside vantage gives.

The lot is small for how well known the falls is, and it sits along a two-lane mountain highway that also carries traffic to Sliding Rock and other Pisgah recreation sites nearby. Expect it to fill on weekends and around midday in warmer months; arriving early or on a weekday gives better odds of a spot close to the falls.

The falls

At 60 feet, Looking Glass Falls drops over a wide rock face into a pool at the base, framed by rhododendron and hemlock. The flow holds up reasonably well through most of the year given how wet this part of the Blue Ridge tends to be, though like any mountain stream it thins out during dry stretches in late summer.

We couldn't confirm any posted rule on wading or swimming at the base. Given that, and given how slick the rock gets near moving water, treat the creek as a look-don't-linger spot rather than assuming it's set up for swimming.
