Machine Falls: trail, parking and access
Machine Falls is free and only a 1.6-mile loop from the trailhead, but the biggest obstacle isn't the hike, it's finding a parking spot. Short Springs State Natural Area outside Tullahoma has room for roughly 20 cars, and the small lot under the water tower fills fast on weekends. The falls themselves emerge from a small cave and drop about 60 feet. Among the stops in our waterfalls in Tennessee guide, this one sits at the smaller and quieter end of the state's free natural areas.

Trail and access
The trailhead sits under a large water tower on Short Springs Road outside Tullahoma, with parking for roughly 20 vehicles in a small lot that regularly fills on weekends and during peak fall color. From there, a 1.6-mile loop trail winds through Short Springs State Natural Area to Machine Falls, a moderate walk without major elevation changes but with some uneven, root-crossed footing typical of Cumberland Plateau feeder trails.
There are no restrooms, water fountains or other facilities at the trailhead. When the small lot is full, the natural area asks visitors not to park along the road in non-designated spots; arriving early or on a weekday is the most reliable way to get a spot.
The falls
Machine Falls drops about 60 feet from an opening that looks like a small cave in the rock face, a distinctive setup among the shorter waterfalls on this list. Flow depends on recent rain, the same pattern as most of the smaller Cumberland Plateau falls nearby: a strong spring flow that can thin considerably by late summer in dry years.
