Noccalula Falls: admission and the hike-under trail
The way to experience Noccalula Falls is from behind it: a trail passes directly under the 90-foot curtain of water the falls throw off a Lookout Mountain ledge in Gadsden, Alabama. Seeing the falls from outside the gated city park is free. The hike-under trail and the rest of the park, including the botanical garden and pioneer village, cost $10 for adults as of August 2026.

Trail and access
Noccalula Falls sits inside a fenced, admission-based city park in Gadsden. The waterfall itself is visible for free from a public vantage point outside the gate, but reaching the hike-under trail, the path that runs behind the sheet of falling water, requires paying full park admission. Once inside, the walk to and behind the falls is short and well developed, part of a larger park that also includes a botanical garden, a pioneer homestead exhibit and a campground. Pricing is reviewed periodically by the city, so check the park's current rates before a trip.
The falls
According to local legend, the falls take their name from a Cherokee princess named Noccalula who is said to have leapt from the ledge rather than accept an arranged marriage, a story commemorated with a statue at the park. Whatever the historical accuracy of the legend, it's part of why this is the most recognized single waterfall in Alabama and the only entry in this guide built around a paid attraction rather than a plain trailhead. The 90-foot drop over the Lookout Mountain ledge holds a visible flow through most of the year, fed by Black Creek, and the hike-under trail gives a view of the water from directly behind the falls that few of the guide's other stops can match.
