Hot springs in Utah: 9 soaks, from free to resort

Nine hot springs in Utah are worth planning a trip around, from a free hike-in soak in Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest to paid resort pools in Monroe and Midway. Most cluster along the Wasatch Front and in the high desert around Monroe and Delta. Fifth Water Hot Springs, also called Diamond Fork, is the best-known free option.

Each entry below lists the fee, the land manager and what the approach looks like, from roadside pools to a five-mile round-trip hike. Utah has lost more than one popular soak to overcrowding and property disputes over the years, so this list sticks to springs with a confirmed, current path to public access.

The hot springs

Fifth Water Hot Springs (Diamond Fork)

Fifth Water is a series of rock-walled soaking pools along Fifth Water Creek in Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, reached by a 2.5-mile hike from the Three Forks trailhead. Soaking is free; the Forest Service charges a day-use parking fee at the trailhead. Full trail details, current fees and winter access notes are on the dedicated Fifth Water Hot Springs page.

Red Hill Hot Springs

Red Hill sits on private land at the edge of Monroe that the owner donated for public use; the city now maintains it at no charge. Four warm pools step down a red dirt mound, each cooler than the one above it as the water travels downhill from a source the NOAA thermal springs archive estimates at 171°F (1980 baseline). Parking is at the base of the hill and the pools are steps away, no hike required. A pit toilet is on site. The city has invested in road and pool upkeep specifically to keep this one free, so pack out trash.

Mystic Hot Springs

Mystic operates a cluster of hillside soaking tubs, including several converted claw-foot bathtubs, on private land in Monroe. Entry is by reservation only through the resort's website, with roughly 10 booking slots released per hour and passes covering a two-hour soaking window. Reservations often sell out one to two weeks ahead in peak season, so this is not a same-day stop.

Homestead Crater

The Homestead Crater is a 55-foot limestone dome in Midway with a geothermal pool enclosed inside, reached through a tunnel cut into the rock. It's run by the Homestead resort as a paid attraction rather than a natural open-air spring. The water holds at roughly 90–96°F year-round, and day entry runs $40 per person plus tax as of 2026, with reservations recommended on weekends (the Crater at Homestead). Beyond soaking, the pool draws snorkelers and certified scuba divers.

Inlet Park hot springs

On the northwest shore of Utah Lake, Saratoga Springs maintains a free geothermal pool inside Inlet Park, open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The NOAA thermal springs archive lists the source here, under the name Saratoga Hot Springs, at 111°F (1980 baseline); the wide mud-bottomed pools blend far cooler by the time you're in them. Unlike most entries on this list, it's a municipal park amenity rather than a wilderness soak: paved parking, posted hours, no reservation. It also makes a fallback when Fifth Water's trailhead lot is full.

Crystal Hot Springs

Crystal Hot Springs in Honeyville sits on a geothermal source the NOAA thermal springs archive lists at 129°F (1980 baseline); the resort describes its spring water coming out of the ground at 120–134°F today. That water is blended down across seven pools, from a cool swimming pool to hot soaking tubs, and the property runs water slides alongside them. Day admission is $18, with discounts for seniors, military and students. It's the most developed, resort-style stop on this list.

Meadow Hot Springs

Meadow Hot Springs is a set of spring-fed pools on private pasture land south of Fillmore, roughly 150 yards from the parking area, with a source the NOAA archive estimates at 106°F (1980 baseline). The landowners allow public access with a donation box rather than a fixed fee, and rules (swimwear required, no alcohol) are posted on site. Because access here depends entirely on the owner's ongoing goodwill, treat the site with more caution than a managed park: pack out everything, and expect that access could change without notice.

Baker Hot Springs

On Bureau of Land Management land west of Delta, Baker Hot Springs feeds three small concrete soaking pools; the source runs at roughly 180°F, a figure both trail reports and the NOAA thermal springs archive agree on, so bathers mix hot and cold by hand to set the temperature. The area is primitive, with a pit toilet but no potable water or trash service, and free dispersed camping is allowed nearby. The last stretch of access road is washboarded gravel.

Gandy Warm Springs

Gandy sits in Utah's remote West Desert, half a mile from the Nevada border, where geothermal water emerges from a cave and feeds a constructed limestone soaking pool. Both the Utah Geological Survey and the NOAA thermal springs archive put the temperature at around 81°F, warm rather than hot. It's a long drive on paved and then gravel roads with no facilities at the site. This one suits travelers already crossing the West Desert rather than a standalone day trip.

How this guide was researched

This guide was compiled from public land-manager sources (the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the cities of Monroe and Saratoga Springs), federal datasets (the NOAA/NCEI thermal springs archive, the Utah Geological Survey), resort and operator websites, and published trail reports. We haven't visited these sites ourselves. Fees, access rules and conditions change; verify current pricing and access with the operator or land manager before you go. Last checked August 2026.

FAQ

Are there free hot springs in Utah?

Yes. Fifth Water Hot Springs, Red Hill Hot Springs, Inlet Park, Baker Hot Springs and Gandy Warm Springs all have no entry fee, though Fifth Water charges for trailhead parking.

Do you need a permit to soak in Utah hot springs?

No permit is required at any spring on this list. Mystic is the only one that requires an advance reservation; Homestead Crater recommends booking ahead, and Crystal sells day admission at the gate.

Is Fifth Water Hot Springs the same as Diamond Fork Hot Springs?

Yes, they're the same place. "Diamond Fork" refers to the canyon and access road; "Fifth Water" is the creek the pools sit along, and both names are used interchangeably by land managers and visitors.

Can you visit Utah hot springs in winter?

Most stay open, but access changes. Fifth Water's upper access road typically closes for winter, adding several miles to the hike; the resort pools keep normal posted hours year-round.

Are Utah hot springs safe for kids?

The resorts are the safer pick: Crystal has cooler family pools, and Homestead Crater holds around 90–96°F. At undeveloped springs like Fifth Water and Baker, hotter unregulated pools sit close together, so check temperatures before letting kids in.

We haven't visited these places ourselves, and every page says so rather than implying otherwise. Details are compiled from public land-manager, USGS and NOAA sources and cross-checked where possible; conditions, access rules and fees change without notice, so confirm with the managing agency before you go.
